Production Scheduling: Art or Science?

Does production scheduling require scientific and creative decision-making skills? From the outside looking in, it may appear that production scheduling is more art that science. Ask an experienced scheduler a sequencing question, and they will tell you why Job B should run before Job A with high confidence. In reality, production scheduling involves complex mathematical formulas and requires highly developed logic and deductive reasoning skills.

To decide why Job B should run before Job A, the scheduler would apply their knowledge of constraints to each job and calculate the total run time for each possibility. If running Job A before Job B requires a longer setup or more advanced cleaning the scheduler will decide that running B before A is more efficient and would improve productivity. In addition, the jobs could be running on resources that behave differently based on the product. If a required tool to run the Job A is not available, then it could be more productive to start Job B instead of waiting around for a tool. There could be many other reasons the scheduler thought of in making their final decision.

To make a production schedulers job more efficient and productive, it is important to give them the tools necessary to calculate the optimal sequence of jobs. Sometimes there are just too many jobs for a scheduler to calculate the optimal sequence in a timely fashion. And if something goes wrong on the manufacturing floor, a scheduler without the proper tools is under extreme pressure to perform and make the right decisions. The right tools enable a scheduler to increase their confidence and make the best decision for your plant. Contact Scheduling Solutions to find out more about PlanetTogether.
